The older I get, the more I never want to appear to be anything other than what I am. That’s why whenever I beat myself up for feeling a particular way, I remind myself to be honest about it so that anyone in a similar situation doesn’t feel alone.
Someone made a comment about my physical appearance recently, and although the logical side of my brain knows that it wasn’t a comment designed to upset me, it hasn’t stopped me from noticing it every time that I look in the mirror.
Before I carry on, I want to point out that the comment that inspired me to write this post was made by someone who genuinely is one of the loveliest people that I have met this year.
It was more of a throw away comment that has affected me way more than it should have due to my tendency to be overly critical towards myself on occasion.
I am someone that tries to actively avoid the pressures put on us in modern society. However, that is sometimes easier said than done. Let’s be honest, it’s normal to have certain things that we don’t like about ourselves.
Having said that, in a world where the pressure to be “perfect” (whatever that is) is constantly thrust upon us, I try my best to be confident in my own skin. I do have to admit though, that I don’t always find it easy.
I think firstly for anyone who is feeling something similar, it’s important to realise that it is completely normal to experience this sometimes. Everyone has little things that they don’t like about themselves.
The main thing to remember that really helped me was, sometimes in life little things happen to remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. It really is that simple. I suppose in a way, we should see it as life’s little way of keeping us grounded.
Also as my mother said to me, even though it can be hard, never look for validation from anyone else. Don’t look for affirmation of your worth, your beauty or your intelligence from anywhere other than within.
Everyone is unique and everyone has something to offer the world so don’t let little comments hold so much power over you.
Be kind to everyone you meet, Always have good intentions and don’t take anyone’s bullshit.
