Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion.

“He was a little shy but not as shy as he succeeded in making people believe. He was simply not very interested in people or money.” – Gloria Guinness

For someone like me who is generally self deprecating in nature, it’s hard to realise how much of an effect lack in self belief has until it catastrophically catches up with you on a random day at the self checkout in Tesco.

Sometimes when I’m majorly lacking in inspiration, the only thing that gets me back on the right track is visiting an exhibition. Just something to provide me with a little reminder to stay in my own lane, not worry too much about what others are doing and just generally back my fine ass self. You know what I mean?

Visiting the Balenciaga: Shaping fashion exhibition at The V&A recently reminded me how far a little bit of self belief can carry you.

Seeing as though taking photographs at the exhibition was encouraged, I thought why not capture a little bit of the magic it has to offer for anyone in a similar position to me right now?

I definitely recommend visiting the exhibition in person though because the pictures really don’t do Balenciaga’s work justice. He really was a true genius.

“Haute couture is like an orchestra whose conductor is Balenciaga. We other couturiers are the musicians and we follow the direction he gives.” – Christian Dior

“Pure white, unornamented and intensively silent…In a room of fifty people, you could hear the buzzing of a fly.” – Andre Courreges, cutter for Balenciaga from 1950 until 1961, describing the work rooms at Balenciaga, Paris

“Balenciaga alone is a couturier in the truest sense of the word. Only he is capable of cutting material, assembling a creation and sewing it by hand. The others are simply fashion designers.” – Coco Chanel

“I came upon two photographs – of a black cape and a trapezoidal gown…I looked down and saw that they were designed by a man named Balenciaga. It went straight to my heart.” – Ralph Rucci

“At a time when everything was very prim and proper and pretty…some things were almost obscene in their scale.” – Molly Goddard

“Balenciaga is the only designer who dares to do what he wants.” – Elsa Schiaparelli

Thanks for checking out the post guys and congrats on making it towards the back end of the week.

The exhibition is running up until the 18th of February 2018 and I can’t encourage you enough to go and check it out.

Peace and love.
