32 Things To Be Happy About

I made the very brave decision to delve into the absolute train wreck that is my book collection recently, which in my world translates to “let’s individually flick through each book and wonder why A) I haven’t finished reading it yet B) I even own it or C) why it is taking me a life time to organise my bookshelf”.

Long story short, I stumbled across “Calm” by Michael Acton Smith and began to wonder why on earth I don’t refer to it more often.

It was full to the brim with straight forward and completely relatable ways to begin living a more mindful life (which in a time where the perplexities of mindfulness seem to be rammed down our throats no matter which way we turn, almost feels like a miracle)

Towards the very end of the book, there is a section dedicated to jotting down your favourite things which states that “just thinking about them will make you smile”.

I was a bit sceptical at first, especially after ordering “14,000 Things to be Happy About” by Barbra Ann Kipfer. I just remember feeling underwhelmed when I received it through the post and that it was a little bit of a waste of money.

Despite that, stumbling across the concept once again in “Calm” made me think that there may be something in this. The notion that listing your favourite things can be great for your wellbeing.

So I decided to list mine. In the hope that I can refer back to it if I ever need to. Here goes.

  • When you manage to get the petrol price on the exact amount you wanted
  • Late night trips
  • When you come home after a long day and your cat comes running down the stairs
  • Seeing people re-unite at airports and train stations
  • Crisp white clean sheets
  • Shopping for skincare
  • People who aren’t embarrassed to dance
  • The sound and smell of rain
  • A fresh sheet of white paper
  • Lists
  • The first stretch when you wake up
  • Buying fruit from markets
  • A sharp pencil
  • Going out without having to take a bag
  • That first sip of a cup of tea
  • People who indicate
  • Opening Parcels
  • Hand written letters
  • Finding something you love while thrifting
  • Going to the gym with Dad
  • The look in a person’s eyes when they discuss something they love
  • Giving and receiving compliments from strangers
  • Shopping for homeware
  • Reaching Junction 33 on the M1
  • When a car drives past and a dog is sticking its head out of the window
  • When someone loves what you recommend
  • Printed newspapers
  • Pens that write smoothly
  • Fresh orange juice
  • People who are unapologetically who they are
  • Baths
  • Unexpected catch ups with my brother

I hope you enjoyed today’s post guys and let me know if any of you have decided to whip up a little list of your own.

  1. So cute. I didnt realize how satisfying some of these things are until i read them. Everyday after work or school I look forward to seeing my two dogs running towards me when I get home. And Im obsessed with stationary so I really appreciate a a crisp piece of paper and a smooth pen or pencil lol
